Categories/Roles: BORIS 25-35 / Male, Female / All Ethnicities Voice RANGE: Baritone or Mezzo|Range: Ab2 – F4 Birdpeson who longs for the ultimate security of the legendary Golden Cage. Mercurial, energetic, animated and single-minded - with the physical eloquence of a mime – but without actually miming, Charismatic, quirky, highly physical, sometimes lacks a firm grasp on reality. An adventurer whose greatest dream is to find a secure hearth and home. Boris is fundamentally likable, naïve, charismatic and engaging – but driven by a passion for achievement and security that was instilled as a child. Neither evil nor immoral, but so consumed by this dream of The Golden Cage and willing to do anything to get it – whether it’s swimming the Amazon, creating elaborate fantasies, lying or even murder. Boris’s life has been an adventure of getting lost while questing for the cage. A birdperson who often can’t tell left from right, or right from wrong. ALPHEA 25-35 / Male, Female / All Ethnicities VOICE RANGE: Soprano/high-mezzo or Tenor/high-Baritone | Range: Ab3 – A5 (with one quick, high C#6 that doesn’t have to sound great): has been imprisoned in the cage and living in isolation so long it seems like forever, and is unable to remember how it all began. Alphea might be a birdperson but doesn’t know, and reaches into a costume box for props, hats and costumes to try to match the identity and persona of the moment. Melodramatic, energetic and physically telegraphs a wide range of moods, from lethargy to aggression. Alphea claims to be a Prisoner of Fate, locked in the cage by mistake. But rather than say it, Alphea would sing it as if it were half-melodrama and half-Wagnerian aria, complete with breastplate and horns. Miserable, defensive and belligerent – except in rare moments when softening into dreams of a life so far away that it now seems like a dream: a dream of flight and freedom. Inside the cage it’s cozy, overfilled with collections of marbles, wigs, musical instruments, books, toys and nicknacks – but Alphea is bored enough to use anything – a breeze, a sound – to create an extreme and dynamic drama. |
