BIOGRAPHY:
SUSAN HWANG (performer, songwriter, piano, accordion, percussion and voice) has been singing the blues since her D.C. days, the only Asian member of gospel choirs since she was 13, eventually joining the University of Maryland Gospel Choir in 1993. She's studied with Howie Feinstein (Maryland - blues piano), Jackie Stevens (Washington D.C. - voice/gospel), Barbara Maier (NY - voice), Ed Pastorini (NY - piano, music theory) and Stanley Harrison (acting). Her vocal range and songwriting experience runs the gamut from hard rock (Murderizer, 1998-2004) to the blues and soul nuanced pop of Clean & Nasty, to the quirky, Americana pop of her current band, The Debutante Hour. She was a founding member of and a vocal soloist for The Main Squeeze Orchestra (the NY-based, all-female, accordion orchestra). A multi-instrumentalist as well as vocalist, Susan performs her original compositions both as a solo performer as well as collaborating within a variety of musical groups. She also founded and hosts the groundbreaking, Bushwick Book Club (www.bushwickbookclub.com) - a monthly series in New York presenting new music inspired by literature. Her recent projects include writing and performing experimental theater with Yara Arts Group in NYC, Europe and Central Asia.
