Talent should be somewhere between late 60’s - early 80’s. Regardless of her actual age see needs to feel young and sprightly, like she could still work in the store that she’s worked her whole life. She shouldn’t feel frail or old. She’s a real, working-class, bolshie Jewish character. It’s crucial that this is authentic, we don’t want someone putting on an accent - we don’t want a caricature. She should feel blue collar/lower middle class - she has to feel like she could fit in anywhere. She’s a genuine New York character. She’s a mother, a grandmother, and godmother to just about everyone in the city. Operating out of a small deli in Manhattan, the bagels she bakes have been keeping New Yorkers going since before time began. Edna’s a tough cookie. She’s frank but fair, and that’s why everyone loves her. She believes that bagels are the best food stuff in the world, made the authentic New York way. The script consists of lots of funny one-liners. The ability to improv is a plus.
